See a record in the rocks from a time when Oregon was a steamy jungle full of strange creatures at a place renowned for its fossils and geologic features. If you have a full day, take in each unit starting with the Painted Hills. Hike Painted Hills Overlook Trail, 0.5-mile round-trip, for great views. Then stop at the visitor center in the Sheep Rock Unit to hear a lecture, see the museum, and pick up maps and brochures. Stop at the Foree Area, just up the road, for a picnic and hike on either the Flood of Fire or Story in Stone interpretive trail. Both are 0.25 mile, round-trip. At the Clarno Unit, the Trail of Fossils, 0.25-mile round-trip, takes you along spectacular cliffs imprinted with fossil leaves from a prehistoric forest.
