The Chimney Rock trail is not the prettiest trail experience in Central Oregon, but it is a nice exhilirating climb. The one-mile ascent has a lot of zigzags and is pretty rocky, but the view from the rest bench at the one-mile mark is well worth the effort. The peak, at the base of Chimney Rock, is not ideal for views, especially if the western sky is cloudy and there are others crowding the peak. Also note that this trail is popular so not the choice for isolationists--and there is very little shade so avoid super-hot days. Best on a weekday early evening, I think; if you haven't driven down Highway 27 before, it is worth it just to see how beautiful the Crooked River Canyon is. Located about 20 minutes south of Prineville, total hike time about 1.5 hours (2.6 miles).
