Carroll Rim - Painted Hills Overlook Professional Review and Guide
"A nice singletrack trail that climbs to the top of Carroll Rim, providing a commanding view of the spectacular painted hills located in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The route then heads up the Painted Hills Overlook Trail and provides another look at the spectacular colors of these unique hills. This route takes you on a journey to the multicolored hills in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. You’ll start by running to the top of Carroll Rim, where you’ll have a wonderful view of Sutton Mountain and the surrounding colorful claystone hills. After a fun descent you’ll head up the Painted Hills Overlook Trail, where you’ll be able to see the rounded hills from a different perspective. If you seek solitude this remote trail run is for you. This trail is a scorcher in the summer—be sure to bring water with you because no water (or rest rooms) are available at the trailhead."
