Butterfly Byway: Big Summit Prairie, Ochoco National Forest Professional Review and Guide
"The warm summer sun brings out the butterflies along this scenic drive through a national forest in central Oregon. Butterfly watching is best between 9 A.M. and 4 P.M., when they are most likely to be flying around feeding on the nectar of the flowers. And you will be better off if you let them come to you rather than chasing after them. So find a comfortable spot, lay out your blanket, sit quietly, and watch the surrounding meadow. Any disturbance your arrival may have caused the meadow’s inhabitants will soon pass, and you will begin to see these delicate creatures fluttering daintily from flower to flower, particularly the common but striking Oregon swallowtail."
