The Peninsula

The Peninsula Professional Review and Guide

"North Portland, that “peninsula” of land wedged between the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, has always been a place apart. Blame it on Interstate 5, which sundered it from the rest of the city in the 1960s. Or credit the fiercely loyal residents, many of them born and raised here.

This ride investigates those changes via a rambling loop full of potential stops and detours. You could spend a whole day at it or breeze through in two hours.

Begin at the Albina/Mississippi MAX Station, where a little cluster of brick buildings along the Union Pacific tracks marks Albina’s early days as a railroad company town. From here you climb up N. Interstate Avenue, ascending the class ladder to arrive among the tidy homes of the Overlook neighborhood. From N. Melrose Drive you get a great view over the sprawling rail yards."
