The trail is fine. There are hills, but the path is pretty smooth and clear. We only made it to Shell Rock Lake due to an injury (not related to the trail). About half the sites have easy lake access, but the other half don't. The water is warm and clear. There were a TON of very hungry mosquitos around dawn and dusk. Bring lots of heay duty bug spray, long sleeves, and pants.
