Kelley Point

Kelley Point Professional Review and Guide

"This is one of my favorite rides, an easy loop around the sloughs and wetlands tucked among North Portland’s sprawling port facilities. At the loop’s midpoint, between Port Terminals 5 (a grain elevator) and 6 (container ships), sits a little wilderness: Kelley Point Park. Here at the tip of the North Portland peninsula, you can watch the great rivers meet.

The ride begins at the Delta Park MAX station and traverses wetlands northward to the Columbia River, then west on the Lewis and Clark Discovery Trail. Houseboats and the half-empty Jantzen Beach shopping center line Hayden Island across the channel. Where the path crosses under the rail bridge, you get a good view of west Hayden Island, 831 acres of forest and riverfront owned by the Port of Portland. The island is a flash-point in debates about our economic future."
