Horsetail, Oneonta, and Triple Falls

Horsetail, Oneonta, and Triple Falls Professional Review and Guide

"If you love waterfalls, this hike is for you. This route through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area visits four beautiful waterfalls, offers a great view of the narrow chasm of Oneonta Gorge, and snakes through a lush, mossy forest filled with wildflowers in spring and summer.

It also climbs up a ridge to the long, sweeping cascade of Horsetail Falls, passes behind the broad cascade of Ponytail Falls, parallels swift Oneonta Creek, and travels along the tall, mossy walls of Oneonta Gorge."

As described elsewhere, the trail is well-designed. The waterfalls are fabulous, and the trail varies from old growth forest to rocky paths. It wasn't very crowded on a weekday, but I would expect to be packed on a weekend.

Hikes to 4-1/2-Mile Bridge Feb. 29, 2008, some muddiness in early parts of the trail (nothing serious) and some snow at the higher reaches (again, not a problem). A half-dozen robust waterfalls, a trail luxurious both in condition and beauty, an extraordinary gorge running below High Bridge, all in all an A-plus hike ... among the very best in Oregon, in my experience. Oh, and hiking down to Eagle Creek to view Punchbowl Falls we found we would have to wade in water above our ankles to see the falls, so we settled (quite satisfactorily) for the view from the top on the trail.

Wow, this hike was amazing and easy. We did not make it to the high bridge but I will be returning to hike this trail again, venturing further than the high bridge. The falls were beautiful, but this is a popular hike so be prepared to pass many folks.

Even with some crowds at the start, this was an experience that should not be missed. One of the most beautiful places I have seen.

Beautiful waterfalls; great fall colors. Eagle Creek is full of spawning salmon this time of year. They''re fun to watch as they try to jump the falls.
