This is Oregon’s first rail-to-trail state park and connects the towns of Banks and Vernonia. The trail follows the West Fork of Dairy Creek through farmland and pastures before climbing into the Coast Range through stands of Douglas-fir, alder, and hemlock, followed by a descent into the Nehalem River Valley and Vernonia. Eighteen miles Northwest of Portland. While the grades on this trail rarely exceed 3 percent, the continual climbing to reach Tophill Pass can be strenuous. Nearly half the trail is paved, including a 7 mile segment near Vernonia. The rest is gravel in good to excellent condition. On rare occasions, snow may make trail impassable. Frost is more common and it may make the paved sections very slippery. Watch for equestrians and announce your presence.
