Deschutes River Trail Professional Reviews and Guides
"This easy route takes you along a scenic section of the rambling Deschutes River. The trail begins at First Street Rapids Park and heads north along the river’s edge. After about a mile you’ll parallel a golf course as the trail winds through a mix of juniper, sage, and yellow-barked ponderosa pine trees. The last half of the trail winds high on the canyon rim and affords stunning views of Mount Washington and Black Butte to the northwest and the Deschutes River far below. Trail surface: Wood-chip trail and paved road."

"Along the Deschutes River between Bend and Sunriver. Beautiful scenery, including three class 5 falls on the Deschutes river and lava flows; rolling singletrack."
--Scott Rapp, Mountain Biking Bend (Falcon Guides).
"You’ll find this section of the Deschutes River Trail near the three iconic smokestacks that mark the Old Mill District in the heart of Bend. Like most of the Pacific Northwest, Bend’s early livelihood was a thriving timber industry."

A pleasant trail-running surprise on my first trip to Bend.
Scenery (this is why I trail run);
Plenty of water for my dog;
Easy access means bigger crowds;
I don't live in Bend.
