Whalen Island

Whalen Island Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Whalen Island is a tiny, densely forested island smack in the middle of Sand Lake estuary. At high tide it's surrounded by water; at low tide, by mudflats teeming with life.

Forest boarders the estuary to the north and south; ocean waves pound the ocean beach to the west at the entrance to the shallow bay."

"Whalen Island is a tiny, densely forested island smack in the middle of Sand Lake estuary. At high tide it’s surrounded by water; at low tide, by mudflats teeming with life. Forest borders the estuary to the north and south; to the west waves pound the ocean beach at the entrance to the shallow bay. The state acquired most of the island and, in 2004, completed a delightful loop trail circumnavigating the island."
