Yaquina Estuary Trail

Yaquina Estuary Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Oregon coast’s two premier marine science interpretive centers are both located along the south shore of Yaquina Bay. Linking the two is a paved trail winding along the edge of the bay.

Interpretive signs describe the dynamics of the estuarine system and identify many of its inhabitants; two observation shelters allow you unobtrusively to watch the passing bird show. Use the path as an alternative to driving between the two centers, or add a short nature walk to a visit to one or both."

"This route explores the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, built in 1871. After exploring the lighthouse you’ll take a stroll on a long sandy beach to the historic Nye Beach District in Newport, which is host to the Newport Visual Arts Center and fun shops. The Yaquina Bay State Recreation Area covers thirty-six acres and is located on the north side of Yaquina Bay in Newport. This popular and often-crowded park is filled with paved walking paths, picnic areas, and interpretive signs that describe the history of the area." "In 1871 a lighthouse was built at the entrance to Yaquina Bay, the first lighthouse north of the Umpqua River on the Oregon coast. Three years later it was mothballed when the more effective Yaquina Head Lighthouse went into service just up the coast. Between them stretch 3.5 miles of beach. Both lighthouses are accessible by car and are open for tours, daily in summer at this writing. If you’re not in a rush, consider walking from one to the other, on what served as the main coastal highway in the 1870s and for several decades thereafter." Read more
