Hike, mostly downhill, from high on the south slope of Mount Hood near Timberline Lodge to a trailhead deep in the densely forested Zigzag Canyon. The total elevation gain for this hike is about 2,600 feet and the elevation loss is approximately 6,200 feet. Before starting your hike, get your Mount Hood Wilderness permit at the east entrance of the Wyeast Day Lodge. This hike begins on the Mountaineer Trail 798. From the parking area east of Wyeast Day Lodge, walk west up the road a short distance to the much smaller overnight parking area for Timberline Lodge. From the west end of the Timberline Lodge parking lot, continue west on a service road. In a few yards you will pass beneath the Magic Mile Ski Lift, where you’ll bear left through a small gravel parking area and pick up the Mountaineer Trail, heading west. The route passes beneath the Storm’n Norman Ski Lift about 0.4 mile after leaving the Timberline Lodge Parking Area. You then climb gently for a little over 0.3 mile, reaching 5,930 feet elevation, at the junction with the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail 2000 (PCT).
