Eightmile Loop Trail

Eightmile Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A stay at the lookout tower at Fivemile Butte has you positioned to explore miles of top-notch single-track. The many riding opportunities are attractive, what's more, the lookout is very cool.

The loop involves seven miles of good single-track with a smattering of minor obstacles. The climbs are mostly easy with some short, moderately difficult grades. Energetic beginners may find this a challenging yet gratifying loop. This loop is about 35 miles south of Hood River."

Extremely fun trail with great views. If only it were longer!

This was my first 100% singletrack ride and it was a great start. We ascended the recommended direction (clockwise around the loop) and it is an easy climb along a creek. Very pretty and the trail is super well maintained. We stopped at the fire tower which was cool and then did the descent. Strange how the going down was so much faster than the up. A lot of folks I've talked to like to go counter-clockwise as it is long and really fast downhill in that direction. I think either way would be great.

Just a fabulous and fun trail. Great views. Good switch backs for beginners to learn. One of our first singletrack experiences on Hood and will do it again.

This is a very dry (read dusty) trail in late summer. It would probably ride better after a decent rain moistened up the power sapping talc. That is my only complaint as this is a great trail. Most of the climbs are long and gradual, and there are some great downhill sections. Technically intermediate is an accurate description. The view from the lookout and a couple of other spots is absolutely incredible!

This is an excellent time of year to ride the eight mile. The trail is in great condition and the wildflowers and wildlife are abundant. The central Oregon type feel of this trail is often dry when the rest of the gorge and Hood to the west are trapped in the rain clouds. One caution would be the switchbacks that descend a little ways past the lookout; the roots and quick turns can easily send you flying. This is definitely on of my favorite rides in the area, because of the variation in terrain and the shade it provides along a beautiful creek on the final ascent.
