"This outstandingly scenic hike has a little of everything. Among other things, the trail passes several very scenic lakes, a wildflower-covered mountain meadow, fine high-elevation forests, viewpoints to distant snow-capped peaks, and fields of tasty huckleberries. There are three different backpacking options, so hikers can select among a very short and easy outing to scenic Shellrock Lake, a longer but still fairly easy trip to Middle Rock Lake, or a more strenuous loop past Serene Lake and Cache Meadow. Although early summer is beautiful here, with an abundance of wildflowers, that is also when the mosquitoes outnumber the wildflowers by about 10,000 to one (at least by this author’s rough estimate). Try late summer for a more enjoyable experience." Read more
