Deschutes River: Lava Island Falls to Meadow Camp Picnic Area Professional Review and Guide
"Lava Island Falls cannot be run in kayaks. The dangerous hydraulic below a ledge on the left side of the island is difficult to see when scouting. Be sure to run the right side of the island. Lava Island Falls is normally portaged at high water. For those not running the falls, paddle across the calm pool at the top of the falls.
Portage on river right down the irrigation canal walkway and put in at the bottom of the falls. The action starts immediately, with no real warm-up. This first class 4 section, Cut Up, abounds with sharp rocks, holes, and waves, depending on water level. The current is very swift. Eddy hop down, watching for new logs at all times. Some good play can be had in this section, but look downstream first. Character: forested; lava canyon."
