Round Mountain Trail

Round Mountain Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike explores a part-wooded, part-open landscape and climbs to the summit of Round Mountain for panoramic views of Big Summit Prairie and distant Cascade peaks.

There's not much water for dogs on the hike, but there's plenty of opportunity for pre- and post-hike swims in Walton Lake just across the road from the trailhead. From the trailhead, the path toward Round Mountain heads through a grassy meadow and then enters a forest dominated by Douglas fir."

I hiked this trail - stopping at Dutch Flat Lake to camp for the evening. I relied on the trail guide here. Two key items - the trail guide misnames most trails. The trail around the south side which is identified as the Lakes Lookout Trail is actually FS Trail 1612 - the Crawfish Basin trail. When you reach the 1612 trailhead coming from the south, you are IMMEDIATELY on the Anthony Lakes Ski Area access road - not "when you get to a saddle." Reading this had me looking for another trail and led to an enjoyable, strenuous, but otherwise fruitless hike up the Lakes Lookout Trail (FS 1618) which is unmarked. Our trip was extremely mosquito-ridden. Weather was moist and they were out in force.
