A paved, 39-mile Type I byway that follows the Rogue National Wild and Scenic River from near Merlin to Grave Creek in southeastern Oregon. Another byway spur climbs 18 miles from Galice into the forested Siskiyou Mountains to the west. Set amid the rugged, densely forested Siskiyou Mountains, the Galice- Hellgate Back Country Byway runs through a variety of terrain that includes agricultural land, a deep river canyon, and steep mountain slopes. The paved Type I byway is two lanes wide from Interstate 5 to Galice.
The rest of the road is single-lane with scenic turnouts and passing zones. The byway can be very busy on summer weekends; otherwise traffic is generally light. Visitor information is available at the BLM’s Rand Visitor Center just north of Galice.
