Sawtooth Crater

Sawtooth Crater Professional Review and Guide

"A short day hike in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Although small portions of this trail are steep, it’s a good hike for families because it’s short and scenic. A perfect place for packing a lunch and eating atop the crater, you’ll sit on what is a vent plug of an ancient volcano.

There’s a great view of the nearby Wallowa Mountains, the Blue Mountains (Elkhorn Ridge), and Baker Valley. Special attractions: Spectacular views and an in-depth look at a volcano crater. The trail is currently unmaintained due to lack of use. If you want solitude, this is the place!"

It was a great short hike! The trail info was a little outdated as most fo the trail markers were missing and there are many small older logging roads which make following the unmarked trail difficult. The trail is a good short hike and very scenic. The view is great from the crater! You have great views of the Keiting area, the Elkhorn Range, it is however difficult to see the larger peaks of the Eagle Caps. It was a fun hike to do with the kids.
