Big Butte Creek: Butte Falls Picnic Area to Crowfoot Road Professional Review and Guide
"Beginning among firs and ending among oaks, this run cuts through some wonderful country. It is creek-type boating with the usual hazards of small riverbeds and heavy vegetation. Expect several portages around logjams. The upper stretch is fast, continuous class 2 and 3 water with a gradient of 120 fpm. At some swift blind corners, very small eddies need to be caught.
Butte Falls, a 15-foot runnable waterfall, is located about 1 mile into the run. If waterfalls are not for you, the portage is on the right. Progressing downstream, the character becomes more pool drop, mostly in the class 3 to 3+ range with an occasional class 4. All can be scouted or portaged at river level. Around mile 8, the gradient again becomes 120 fpm. Character: wooded."
