Macks Canyon Recreation Site Professional Review and Guide
"This campground occupies a site where prehistoric Indian tribes wintered in pit houses more than 2,000 years ago. Present-day campers are similarly attracted to the mostly open river flat because of its convenient access to the Deschutes River and superb fishing and boating. The abandoned railroad grade on this side of the canyon serves hikers and bicyclists. It extends from the north end of the camp downstream to Deschutes River State Recreation Area. The trail offers fine river views and occasional river access, but beware of rattlesnakes in the rocky reaches and off-trail. Fires and smoking are prohibited June 1 to October 15; boaters should familiarize themselves with river rules."
