Deschutes River US 26 Bridge to Sherar’s Falls

Deschutes River: US 26 Bridge to Sherar’s Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The lower Deschutes runs through a large desert canyon with an active railroad along the river. Rattlesnakes, chukars, and deer live here. The bottom of the canyon can become oppressively hot in the summer. Stiff upcanyon winds are normal in the afternoon. This stretch is a designated scenic waterway. The river has numerous class 2 play spots, good sharp eddies, and several class 3 rapids.

The water is clear, fishing is usually good, and campsites are plentiful— but watch out for poison oak. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs own the land along the left. The run from Upper Wapinitia, just above Maupin, to Sherar’s Falls is a popular day-trip. The tempo is faster on the section from Maupin to Sherar’s Falls, one of the most popular summer rafting runs in Oregon. Character: popular desert canyon."
