Lost Lake is well known. Chances are, you have been picnicking or camping there before. If not, everyone else has. Its popularity is entirely justified: A small, beautiful lake with a campground, picnic area, and resort, it offers a dramatic close-up view of the north and west faces of Mount Hood. The popularity of Lost Lake has not destroyed it, however. The Forest Service has done an excellent job of dealing with the throngs that visit the lake each summer. The campground and most of the resort facilities have been kept away from the shore of the lake, so the view from the water is largely that of a wilderness lake. And the policy of not permitting motorized boats has helped keep the water clear.
