Lostine - Minam Loop Backpacking

Lostine - Minam Loop (Backpacking) Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is one of several classic loop hikes in the Wallowa Mountains. Like the others, this one includes all the major attractions of this wonderful range. There are mountain lakes, high alpine passes, wildflower-filled meadows, clear streams, and granite peaks. These features make this hike fairly popular, but it’s not as crowded as the Wallowa River Loop. For those with less time or ambition, this route lends itself nicely to a shorter version.

In fact, the most common way this trip is done skips East Lostine Canyon and Minam Lake, and heads directly up the West Lostine River to the Copper Creek Trail. Without side trips this alternate loop is only about 32 miles long. Don’t forget your fishing gear (lots of lake and stream fishing is available), binoculars (to search for elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats), swim suit, and, most of all, your camera (the scenery is terrific)."

This is a great hike if you can find the time to get to this remote area of Oregon. The authors description is good. You will not find many backpackers on the west side except for the copper creek trail on a weekend. You will see groups of people traveling by horseback.

This hike is very high and the air is thin so either be in really great shape or work into the hiking. You are generally climbing or desending and some of the climbs are steep with minimal cover from the sun so if that bothers you then try to hike the climbs early.

I went in mid-August and it was generally cool at night but not cold. The one exception was at John Henry Lake. I'm not sure but my it must have been very close to freezing as my partner and I both sunk deep into our 20-degree bags to stay warm.

There is lots of water so it is generally not necesary to carry more then a couple quarts at a time. Lot of wildflowers if you like that also.
