The Sky Lakes Wilderness protects a narrow strip of forested mountains along the Cascade Divide south of Crater Lake. The wilderness is popular with lake lovers, who delight in the region’s countless lakes and ponds. Unfortunately, all that water feeds an enormous population of invertebrate vampires. So in July, you will cover the miles very quickly, because the mosquitoes instill a strong desire to keep moving. It is better to go from late August to mid-September, when the bugs are mostly gone and the huckleberries are ripe.
