Squaw Lake

Squaw Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Squaw Lake is the closest lake to Mount McLoughlin. What makes this route particularly interesting (the lake itself really isn’t that interesting) is that the trail crosses a huge terminal moraine at the base of a giant glacial cirque on McLoughlin. This is the only close-up view of the cirque.

From high up on the Mount McLoughlin Summit Trail, the huge, barren lava slopes on the peak’s northeast face—extending from near the summit down almost to Four Mile Lake—look for all the world like a crater left by a lateral volcanic blast, with an immense rubble field at the bottom. Only from the Squaw Lake Trail, which crosses the rubble field, does it become clear (from the rounded rocks) that this is a terminal glacial moraine."
