The Seven Devils Mountains don’t look as if they belong in the Pacific Northwest, where we are accustomed to massive volcanoes standing alone in the landscape. These Idaho peaks are almost otherworldly looking in the way they claw at the sky, and this route will show you why. Similarly, the Wallowa Mountains, which this route pokes into, often have been called by the comical nickname “America’s Little Switzerland,” because of their rugged jumble of peaks and valleys, standing in dramatic contrast to the peak-and-plain geography of western Oregon. This route not only will whet your appetite for more Wallowas exploration, but also will show you that it takes a bit of work to get into them. Much of the trail here passes through the site of the Canal fire of 1989, so expect a lot of openings with dramatic vistas to the east.
