This loop is moderately difficult, but it is well maintained and amply signed. It climbs steeply at first, but gets easier as it contours up the hillside. The circuit drops rapidly for .4 mile on Big Sheep Cutoff Trail, then continues to descend for 2.4 miles on a rough gravel road. Next a short pedal on pavement brings you to Forest Service Road 023. This double-track climbs back to the trailhead at Salt Creek Summit. FS 023 is in poor condition, with rocky and soft stretches. Salt Creek Summit is located approximately 18 miles southeast of Joseph.
