These short but varying routes through the Wallowa Mountain foothills offer stellar views of surrounding mountain ranges, such as the Seven Devils range. The area was changed dramatically after the 1989 Canal fire, a 23,000-acre forest fire that covered much of this area. But what’s been left behind is a beautiful study in contrasts. The tall silvery snags, some partially charred to black, make a sort of cool, beautiful contrast against the pure white snow. Beneath these burned veterans, hundreds of upstart trees grow, thick and bushy in the newly provided sun exposure. The burn has also opened up views of the surrounding mountains that might have only been available in quick glimpses before.

Better than expected! Being used to snowshoeing on Mt. Hood this doesn't compare in terms of the numbers of locations/THs to choose. That aside it was really MUCH BETTER! On a week day there were 5 cars in the lot and in 3 hrs on the trails I saw only one other person. The snow was great, trails well marked w/ signs and diamonds. The day was clear w/ 360 views. I do hear thou that it is rather busy on wkends w/ snowmobils. Will do this again!
