Sacajawea Peak

Sacajawea Peak Professional Review and Guide

"Sacajawea Peak is the tallest mountain in the Wallowa Mountains. At least it is the current tallest peak, the alternate tallest peak being the Matterhorn at 9824 feet. For some reason the designation of the tallest peak in the Wallowas is frequently under dispute, although it matters little.

The dragontail north ridge looks quite rugged and dramatic from the summit and has a daunting reputation as an extreme scramble. To the north the white slopes of Matterhorn gently climb toward its rounded summit. Along the way, enjoy the drama of the diverse forest in the Hurricane Creek canyon and the serene Thorp Creek valley below the Hurwal Divide. Although many animals enjoy this rich habitat, most scramblers will see only mountain goats, deer, and a variety of birds from the trail."
