On a hot afternoon, the cold, clear water, nice lunch spots, and good play spots draw rafters and kayakers to this river canyon. The rapids are fairly continuous, especially during the first few miles. The river is very narrow, and one must move from one side of the river to the other and back again. This exciting class 3+ run has two class 4 drops that can be portaged. If boaters choose to run Maytag, take the short trail upstream and put in in the pool immediately above the rapid. The right trail leads to a put-in on the rock shelf below Maytag. Below Maytag the river immediately begins dropping through continuous class 2 to 3 rapids. Be careful of the undercut cave on the right about 0.5 mile from the put-in. Several bigger rapids appear in the first half of the run. At most flows, they are fairly straightforward. At low flows, they get quite rocky. The last drop, Husum Falls, is a 10-foot vertical drop generally run right of center. Scout Husum Falls from the take-out in Husum. Take out about 150 feet before the falls on river right to avoid the plunge. Character: forested canyon.
