The West Fork of Hood River is one of the best intermediate runs in Oregon. Beautiful basalt gorges, nearly continuous rapids, and an isolated canyon make this a run a classic. The run is a solid class 4 at normal flows, but as flows increase above 3000 cfs, the pools below rapids become small or nonexistent and some of the rapids deserve class 5 attention. The first 2 miles of the run contain many fun class 3 to 3+ rapids and two scenic basalt gorges. About 2 miles downriver from the put-in is a riverwide fish ladder where once there was a beautiful 13-foot waterfall. Portage on the left. Character: forested.
