The Calapooia River winds for more than 60 miles from Albany to foothills of the Cascade Range. Recent clearcuts mar the landscape along the river, but the river corridor is lined with deciduous trees and is still very scenic. The area is diverse, with rocky gorges, gravel bars, sandy beaches, small cliffs, and open farm and grazing lands along the river's lower stretches. Most of the Calapooia's rapids are on the easier side of the class scale. Routes through them are generally straightforward and easy to read from the boat.
