White River

White River Professional Review and Guide

"Few views of Mount Hood surpass those from the broad, snow-covered White River Canyon. The mountain greets visitors from the sno-park and stays visible throughout the ski tour. The incredible scenery and gentle terrain make this sno-park very popular. Visit on a weekday if solitude is important.

Blanketed by snow, the White River looks deceptively serene and docile, belying its power to wash tons of mud across the highway after heavy rains. White River often marks the transition zone where westside clouds give way to the blue sky that is more common on the east side. Track Quality: Fair classic skiing, no skating."

"White River Canyon, the huge drainage between Timberline Lodge and Mount Hood Meadows ski areas, is flanked by Boy Scout Ridge and the West Moraine on one side"

"There are good reasons why this area is so popular. For starters, from the moment you get out of your car the view of Mount Hood is spectacular, and it just keeps getting better. It’s well worth the extra weight in your pack to carry a camera, because you’ll be facing Oregon’s biggest peak squarely for almost the entire route.

The White River Sno-Park is also uniquely positioned to give you access to several winter playgrounds on the south side of Mount Hood. The trail from the parking lot is heavily used on weekends and holidays. But if you keep on walking, you should notice that the traffic fades significantly after about a half mile."

Great trail that offers good views of Mount Hood. It's nice because you can either hike out in the open expanse next to the river, or head up in the trees for some different scenery. It is an out and back trail that is pretty easy to navigate due to the fact that you parallel the river the whole time.
