Highway 138 to Highway 58 Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Needle-pointed Mt. Thielsen, approached early on this hike, is this sectionfs star attraction; its terrain is even more spectacular than that seen along the PCT through this sectionfs Diamond Peak Wilderness. Unfortunately, when the PCT was finally completed through this section around 1977, its route proved to be inferior in esthetics compared with its predecessor, the Oregon Skyline Trail. That trail touched on enjoyable Diamond Lake, which most long-distance PCT hikers visit anyway. It also took you past Maidu Lake, which was one of this sectionfs best camping areas when mosquitoes werenft biting. The lake was an important water source; now it is almost one mile out of the way. Furthermore, the old trail went past a series of lakes, but this route has been replaced with a nearly lakeless route that remains more faithful to the crest. This new route tends to be snowbound about a month longer than the older route, Finally, whereas the Oregon Skyline Trail came to within 1.2 mile of the Cascade Summit store and post office at Odell Lake, the PCT comes only to within 11.2 miles of it. Consequently, we will describe the old route as well as the new one."
