Fall in Oregon’s big sky country features aspens in golden splendor, grand vistas, and a taste of the freedom of the open range. Take the Steens Mountain Loop Road from Frenchglen as it gradually climbs up the less-steep west side, through grasslands and juniper forest. The road is gravel and rough in some places, and you may even encounter patches of snow to drive through or around. But the road is generally in fairly good shape and passable with a passenger car if you drive slowly and carefully. There are some winding sections along the way, with steep drop-offs and no guardrails, so drive carefully.
