Hagg Lake

Hagg Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Hagg Lake is another classic road loop, one of the best beginner rides around. A lightly traveled road circles a reservoir tucked against the Coast Range at the edge of the metro area. Trailheads, boat launches, and parks ring the lake."

"This ride begins at the historic McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, and takes you through the rural farm country of Washington County. On this route you’ll have the opportunity to stop and taste fine wines at the Montinore Winery and cruise around scenic Hagg Lake, where you can stop and hike, have a picnic, or take a refreshing swim."

"Maybe the most interesting tidbit here is that the loop around Hagg Lake is regularly used for cycling time trials. What does that tell you? Well, if you ride hard, this loop is a really good test of your ?tness.

But it’s also a pleasant ride as more of a meander, with rolling hills, swooping curves, and some million-dollar views that aren’t spoiled by sprawling McMansions. While you’re just about 30 minutes from Portland, this is a very rural ride."

I really enjoyed this ride through the hills around the lake and ending up at a soaking pool -- what more can you ask for really? Beautiful, a bit busy, but fun.

Great ride thru wine country, farms, and into forests with a beautiful loop around the lake. Starts on highway with good wide bike lanes and paths. Wine tasting has increased price to at least $7 for 5 tastes (no glass; $10 gets glass but hard to carry on bike), but had live music on Memorial Day weekend. Beautiful views from the tasting room and picnic tables to enjoy from outside. Old Highway 47 lacks bike trails, but traffic was light. Hills around lake are more than indicated on map. There are about 4 200 to 300 foot elevation climbs that reward you with nice down slope glides. Recommend going clockwise around lake as map recommends to get the benefits of the views and gets the largest climbs done in the first third of the lake loop.

Short segment on medium traffic highway, great stretches through farms and wine country area and a sweet ten mile loop around Hagg Lake. Fun trip, enjoyed the $3 wine tasting on the return and the post-ride burger and micro-brew at McMennamins. About a 30 minute drive (car) from downtown Portland.
