A roadside shack and hot tanks set between the Alvord Desert and Steens Mountain. Keep swimwear handy. Two adjoining concrete tanks, 10 feet square and 3 feet deep, are recessed into the ground. One is open to the elements while the other is walled in by a boxy bathhouse minus a roof. The walls form a windbreak as well as a sunshade, and the open top promotes nighttime star gazing, a highly recommended activity out here. A changing room with a bench adjoins the shack, and a plank deck with another bench wraps around two sides. Alvord Hot Springs looks out across the vast satin-finish playa of the Alvord Desert to the east and the silhouette of the rugged Steens to the west. There’s a campsite across the road and another with more privacy up Pike Creek, 1.6 miles north. The springs, privately owned but open to the public, are usable year-round.
