Alvord Desert Professional Review and Guide
"Highlights include a low desert along the base of the steep side of the Steens Mountains, with a close-up view of the dramatic 3-mile rise of the Steens from 4,600 feet to 9,773 feet. This trip takes you along the base of the Steens Mountains for a close-up view of Oregon’s steepest and most dramatic mountain rise. It’s 35 miles of flat, occasionally marshy desert before you reach the base of Steens Mountain, although the range has been gradually building to this sudden crescendo since shortly after the turnoff from Highway 78."

Access to the lake can be tricky, as some of the land is privately owned or controlled by hot springs campsites. There's still plenty of ways out there. I managed it in a 2013 Ford Fiesta - not exactly build for the task, but once you're on the playa it's as flat as a pancake.
What an awesome place to explore, the best time to go is in late fall or spring time, bring a towel to relax in the hotsprings.
