For something a bit different, try an afternoon of snake watching at a wildlife area just outside the university town of Eugene. On a warm sunny afternoon, you can spot dozens of harmless garter snakes along a soggy fence row. From the parking area, walk north up the gravel road for about 0.2 mile to the gate. Turn left and walk along the fencerow, watching the ground along both sides of the path. The fence row will be on your right, and an open, marshy area will be on your left.
