This route puts you just inside the Diamond Peak Wilderness via a short chunk of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. The route to the lake is beautiful, but Midnight Lake itself is distinctly unspectacular, not much more than a clearing in the woods. There’s the side benefit of having the Bechtel Shelter along a return route, should you choose to make a loop out of the trip. Whichever way you go, allow about 4 to 5 hours and enjoy the view of Diamond Peak, which dominates the landscape out here.
