When asked to recommend a solid, challenging route near Willamette Pass, I’ll always answer “Maiden Peak!” This is a tough route, one that should not be undertaken lightly. It’s one of those trips that you can brag about when finished and point to frequently when you’re on other hikes in the Willamette Pass region. But you’ll need more than ego inflation to fuel your trip to Maiden Peak. I’d say go because you’ll get unparalleled views of the central Oregon Cascades and other prominent landmarks. Or do it because you want to see just how far your legs can go in a single day. I’ve limited the possible season for this route to March, though in reality most Oregon snow years allow you to chase the summit of Maiden Peak well into June.

One of the best snowshoe trips out there. Stay the night at Maiden Peak Hut and continue on down to Rosary Lakes the following day. A workout well worth it!
