The Lake Creek area is a lush, forested region nestled between mountain ridges. Triangle Lake drains into the creek about 20 miles above the confluence with the Siuslaw River, but paddlers run only the last 5 miles of the creek regularly, since these hold the best play spots and whitewater. Only the most extreme boaters will wish to venture in the water below Triangle Lake, since the mile below the picnic area access there is a very turbulent, steep, waterfall-and log-infested onslaught. The 15 miles between this hard stuff and the surf mecca is flatter, narrow, and brushy. The water rates a Class II, but paddlers should watch for strainers in a few places. Put in at Greenleaf for a warm-up above the surf section, or to enjoy a more relaxed float to Deadwood.
