Divide Lake

Divide Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Despite impressive scenery, numerous lakes, and relatively easy access, Diamond Peak is ONE-WAY the most overlooked major mountain in Oregon. This may be due to the mountain’s lack of a single summit, which makes the peak less distinctive than its neighbors, or it could be the clouds of mosquitoes that plague early-summer visitors.

Regardless, the Diamond Peak Wilderness remains relatively undiscovered by the booted masses. The scenic trail to Divide Lake, tucked neatly into a small basin on the northwestern shoulder of Diamond Peak, provides a good sampling of this area’s charms, allowing you to judge the merits of this wilderness for yourself."

"A day hike or overnight backpack to an alpine lake nestled below the steep slopes of Mount Yoran in the Diamond Peak Wilderness. This hike offers excellent views. The trail climbs onto the long northwest ridge of Mount Yoran and follows the ridge toward the peak, sometimes visible through the trees ahead.

At a saddle, there’s a fairly good view toward the north, with Broken Top and South Sister visible in the distance. Part of the Vivian Lake basin, including the meadow near the lake, can be seen from a closer viewpoint. As the trail continues along the ridge, dipping in and out of saddles and climbing over small knobs, there are occasional glimpses of Diamond Peak to the south. Permit: Permit required for day and overnight hikes; self issue at trailhead."
