The once popular trail to Fish Creek Mountain and High Lake fell off the radar screens of most local hikers when the massive floods of February 1996 permanently closed the western access roads to this scenic area. In recent years, however, a group of dedicated volunteers has reopened a rugged older route that approaches this area from the east, once again allowing hikers and backpackers to enjoy the many charms of this region. And those charms are indeed many, including outstanding views, excellent wildflower displays, interesting rock formations, and a fine camp at very scenic High Lake tucked beneath the hulking east face of Fish Creek Mountain. Although it is improving over time, the new access trail is still rough, steep in places, and unsigned, so hikers must be prepared to work for their rewards.
