Highlights include a challenging road, a lovely lake, and trailheads into one of Oregon’s most underrated wilderness areas. The Elk Lake Road is purposely kept to a low standard of maintenance to discourage overuse. Elk Lake otherwise might get a great deal of visitor spillover from the popular Detroit Lake resort area.

As far as driving off road it's pretty weak, I made it all the way there in 2wl dr. I saw a Subaru Outback out there, along w/ an Enterprise rental car. I found quite a few lower spoilers & a few wheel opening mldgs on my trip. I really wish people wouldn't leave that stuff around. That being said, Elk lake & its campground are beautiful. When I was there, except for 3 parked cars on the road in. The campsite was empty & quiet. Even if theres people at the campsite it's big enough to be able to find your own space. You can bring boats but I believe they can only have an electric motor. If for some reason it is full you can backtrack & try to find Dunlop lake. Its a much smaller lake w/ free campsites. Overall it's really cool campsites you can get to in a Subaru.
