"This unique trail traces the banks of the clear, fast-moving Metolius River and meanders through a lush riparian ecosystem of bright wildflowers and riverside vegetation. The spring-fed river rushes over lava to create swirling rapids and big eddies that"

"An exquisite river run through a sunny ponderosa pine forest to Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery. This spectacular riverside trail will make your spirit soar.

The crystal-clear waters of the wild and scenic Metolius River are center stage and the park-like ponderosa pine forest, lush streamside vegetation, and sweet singletrack make up the award-winning cast. For the encore you can explore the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery, with its viewing ponds, interpretive displays, and a shady picnic area. Rest rooms are available in the campground (no water)."

This is one of my favorite "collect your thoughts" hikes in Central Oregon. The first 1.2 miles keeps you right next to the rushing Metolius River, and is a five-star hiking experience in the secluded and protected river wilderness. The second half is not quite as nice, as the trail takes you farther away from the water and up into more desolate forest areas before reaching an anticlimactic turnaround point at the Wizard Falls Hatchery. Neither direction has much strenuous altitude gain and it's nice that the hike ends back on the strong note of tracing the water's edge for the last mile. The trail, which is about a 20 minute drive from Sisters, is very well-defined, and generally not busy (horses and bikes are not allowed). A highly recommended water hike and if you want a shorter experience, just go until it starts to pull away from the water and turn around. Very rarely can you hike this close to a strong river for this long.

Beautiful hike along the Metolius. Not at all strenuous.
