Amazing views of the lake from the top of the island. New 2006 policy guarantees spot on boat to leave but sadly limits visits to 2 hours, making it impossible to leisurely enjoy the islad.

The trails is well worth the effort. And effort it is. There are other lava domes (Lava Butte is nearly identical and you can drive to the top). But the experince and beauty of the immensity of crater like down to smallest detail of the lava make this trip worthy of the effort. You are only allowed 2 hours to make the hike up the trail so there is not much time to relax or enjoy the sites too much. Oh, and bring water!
