"The privately operated, ranger-guided boat ride to Wizard Island is a treat even if you don’t take the hike. The boat leaves from the end of the Cleetwood Cove Trail and costs $15 (the price goes up frequently). It takes 40 minutes to reach the island and another hour to get back to Cleetwood Cove. Along the way, the boat visits the Devil’s Backbone, Llao Rock, an incredibly beautiful waterfall, the Phantom Ship, the lake’s 1,932-foot “deep spot,” and much more. Even up close, it’s the bluest water you can possibly imagine.
The little harbor of jagged black lava rock at Wizard Island is gorgeous bordering on enchanted. Scattered mountain hemlock offers a modicum of shade while the nearly symmetrical, 764-foot cone rises abruptly in the background. Highlight: A boat ride to an island in Crater Lake, followed by a trek to the summit of a 750-foot-high cinder cone. Regarded by some as Oregon’s most spectacular and unusual hike."
