This campground occupies a forested rim at a popular hiker and equestrian gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The sites are well spaced, comfortable, and well used, especially during hunting season. Horse Ranch Trail descends from this Wallowa Mountain plateau, passing through a historic horse ranch at the bottom of the canyon, to meet the pristine Minam River and its trail to discovery. If you visit the ranch area, travel lightly, and pitch backpack and horse camps well away from this fragile historical resource. The terrain resembles Hells Canyon as much as the Wallowa high country: View basalt-tiered grassland rims and rocky summits.
